If you think Mulanje Mountain is beautiful from the bottom, hold your comments until you climb at least to Chambe Peak, about 2,500 metres above sea level. From there you see the full beauty of the massif, formed by magma intruding into the earth's crust about 130 million years ago.
The mountain, nicknamed the "Island in the Sky", is part of the protected Mulanje Mountain Forest Reserve — home to the last remaining stands of the endangered Mulanje cedar.
